ECO-CENTRIC ART + SCIENCE: Prophesies and Predictions is an open-mic marathon symposium featuring artist and author in residence Linda Weintraub, nanoscientist James Gimzewski, evolutionary biologist Charles Taylor, environmentalist and author Ursula Heise, curator Sophie Lamparter, nano-toxicologist Olivia Osborne, and media art graduate students David Ertel + Symrin Chawla.

Spring artist-in-residence and author, Linda Weintraub’s forthcoming book: “WHAT’S NEXT? Eco Materialism and Contemporary Art” provides the opportunity for professors and students from multiple academic disciplines to share their predictions of the way ecology will impact the theory, practice, insight, re-evaluation, or revision in their discipline in the coming years.

LUCIE STRECKER + KLAUS SPIESS

XCurrency Exhibition Opening

Art|Sci's current artists-in-residence Lucie Strecker and Klaus Spiess present the performative installation XCurrency as a work in progress. Their artistic research explores experimental currency systems that can negotiate value through their liveness when mediated by interfaces with consumers and their affective resources.

XCurrency is based on Lucie Strecker’s and Klaus Spiess’s previous work ‘Hare’s blood+’ which reflected on artworks incorporating animal relics. The artists designed a synthetic gene from a Joseph Beuys multiple that contained hare’s blood and spliced it into living cells which were put up for auction. The bids at the auction were linked to the living and dying processes of the cells, positioning them as agents in the making of value, in line with a counter-economy envisioned by Joseph Beuys.

Whether proposing exchange by liveness within an auction or as now relating the informational virtuality of the expanded genetic alphabet of XDNA with speculation on the financial markets, the artists always propose a reciprocal qualitative dependency between currencies and their consumers.

Lucie Strecker and Klaus Spiess have been developing transdisciplinary performances and installations that address biopolitical issues for many years. A former endocrinologist, psychosomaticist and medical anthropologist, Klaus Spiess now works as an artist and associate professor at the Medical University of Vienna. Lucie Strecker is an performance artist and researcher and holds a senior postdoc position at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Performances and installations by both artists have been shown at Budascoop Kortrijk, Tanzquartier and Belvedere/21er Haus, Vienna, at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, the BEALL Center for Art + Technology, Irvine, the Onassis Cultural Center Athens and the OK Center, Linz, where the duo were awarded an Honorary Mention (2015) at the Prix Ars Electronica. They have published numerous articles on their transdisciplinary performances in Performance Research, Kunstforum International, Springerin and The Lancet, among others.

UCLA Sculpture Garden

An acoustic construction: hyper sound speakers amplify and present sounds from nature.

UCLA Professors Charles Taylor, Evolutionary Biology and Victoria Vesna, Design | Media Arts present the work of Professor Takashi Ikegami and his students Atsushi Masumori, Itzuki Doi, and Norihiro Maruyama. This is one aspect of a multi-year transdisciplinary collaborative project “Mapping the Acoustic Communication Networks of Birds” funded by NSF and will be presented at the upcoming Artificial Life conference in New York.

In this installation the participant/viewer experience sound that can be directed to give a 3D experience and “view” the soundscape from different angles and reflections — similar to the reflections/refraction of light seen through diamonds. Highly directional hyper sound speakers and motion sensors create immersive, targeted soundscape patterns in some ways richer than those which occur naturally. By moving around the viewer can view and review their sound environment with a heightened awareness. We anticipate that Birdsong Diamond will leave viewers with new questions about their soundscape environment.

Brainstorming Turing: Celebrating Alan Turing + 25 Years of AI and Society Journal

100 years have passed since Alan Turing was born and we celebrate this historically important individual together with many organizations around the world. We look to show his eccentric creativity in addition to reminding all of the huge contribution he made to computation and artificial intelligence. Short talks by computer / neuro / nano scientists and humanists are accompanied by artists inspired by Turing’s legacy and persona. Additionally, students from UCLA will participate with their ideas of how Turing informs and inspires their work and lives in this time when social networking, robotics and automatic brains are part of daily life.

2012 also marks 25 years since the establishment of AI & Society journal that owes its formation to Turing’s legacy. The Art | Sci center is partnering with this interdisciplinary publication to honor Turing and all those who have contributed over the years. A special issue based on the symposium is planned.

Trust Me, I’m an Artist: Towards an Ethics of Art and Science Collaboration

 

This series of public events, taking place in international settings, investigates the new ethical issues arising from art and science collaboration and consider the roles and responsibilities of the artists, scientists and institutions involved.

 

At each event (before a live audience) an internationally known artist will propose an artwork to a specially formed ethics committee (following the rules and procedures typical for the host country), the ethics committee will then debate the proposal and come to a decision, the artist will then be informed of the ethics committee’s decision and, alongside the audience, they can enter into a discussion about the result. 

 

The proposals have been selected as they raise interesting questions for science ethics committees and will help reveal the mechanisms that drive this usually hidden process, enabling the wider public to understand the driving forces behind ethical decisions and the role of artists working in scientific settings more deeply.

 

The project “Trust Me I’m an Artist: Towards an Ethics of Art/Science Collaboration” is led by artist Anna Dumitriu in collaboration with Professor Bobbie Farsides (Chair of Ethics, Brighton and Sussex Medical School) in collaboration with the Waag Society and The University of Leiden.

 

Event 1: “Mutate or Die” with Adam Zaretsky

Venue: The Theatrum Anatomicum, De Waag, Nieuwmarkt 4, Amsterdam, Netherlands 

 

This project addresses the life sciences’ enormous investment in the illusion of objective control over the biological world, and the tag team efforts of “pan-capitalism” and the biotech industry’s privatizing of genetic research and patenting life forms. The writer William S. Burroughs' genetic material will be used in a speculative artistic experiment that will involve the creation of a transgenic mutation. The public will be invited to participate in the process, specifically within the portable lab we will build in a gallery space.

 

Bioart tends to use cutting edge biotechnology as an art-making device and specializes in presenting living organisms as art. In this project, a DNA sample from Burroughs has been isolated, amplified and will be shot into the nuclei of some cells. At the core of the project will be the gene gun blast that will biolistically combine tiny pieces of William S. Burroughs’ gut flora / script/ gene text with another organism’s genetic script / gene text, to produce a transgenic mutation, or put in another way, an “intentional-genetic modification orgiastic”, or “i-GMO”. After the gene gun blast sets the mutations in motion, we will invite the audience into the process as readers / interpreters of the stories embedded within the old beat writer’s gut.

 

The Waag's historic Theatrum Anatomicum, is a wholly appropriate venue to house such a discussion. Built in 1691 as a space dedicated to advanced experimenting, observing and learning, it was the place where leading figures of the surgeon's guild dissected the corpses of many criminals to expose the anatomy of the human body and help advance medical science. At later stages these dissections turned into events where not just medical professionals or students, but also the man in the street could have a glance at this intriguing, taboo-breaking world of new discoveries.
